(1941 - ) Surabaya, Indonesia
Educated in Dutch schools and privately tutored in art, Yvonne has always been drawn to the human figure. She moved to Honolulu in 1967 and enrolled in a batik class at the Bishop Museum. She used batik as her primary medium from 1970 to the early 1980s. Later, she worked on paper, in collage and with mosaic tile installations. Yvonne Cheng is now mostly involved with commission work on major corporate placements.
Her figures are relaxed and often lounging, creating the feel of an Island lifestyle. Another detail of interest is that the features of the women are treated loosely, yet an individual spirit appears to inhabit each figure.
You will see her framed brushed ink paintings in the public areas of the Hotel Hana-Maui.
